Background
The port's private facilities handle petroleum, scrap and coal. The port handled 6.48 million tonnes of cargo in 2016, about 59% of which was imports.[2] In the first half of 2017, the Port of Kiel saw a 27% uptick in business compared to the same months in 2016, with paper, building materials, coal and oil being the main commodities passing through the port. Imports included Australian coal bound for the nearby Kiel power station.[3]
