Mariupol is Ukraine’s primary trading port in the Sea of Azov. It is a major export port for coal and steel since Soviet times.[1] Coal is transhipped at a specialised complex that was commissioned in 1972. Coal capacity is five million tonnes per year.[2] According to data from the port, in the first two quarters of 2014 the port exported 1.2 million tonnes of coal.[3]
The port also imports coal from Australia[4] and South Africa.[5]
