The port lies at the head of the Buh River estuary in southern Ukraine about 65 kilometers north of the Black Sea.

Background

Port of Nikolayev (Port of Mykolayiv) was founded in 1789. The port is located at the mouth of the Southern Buh River and have access to the Black Sea through a 44-mile shipping canal. In January-February 2015, the port handled 300,000 tonnes of coal, and exported 151,000 tonnes of coke.[1]

The port's loading rate for coal is 10,000 tonnes per day, or 3.65 million a year.[2]
