Background

The port handled the majority of Newport coal exports from the local mines in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Due to a decline in coal mining in the 1990s, the port diversified to handle bulk and conventional cargo, including coal, wood-pellet, scrap, and steel. The volume of imported coal increased from zero in 2003 to 4.9 million tonnes in 2013, making it the UK's second largest coal importer.
