Background

Porto Empedocle LNG Terminal is a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Sicily, Italy. The project would cost around $1.2 billion. The proposal was originally developed by Nuove Energie Srl, which was bought by Enel in 2007. [1] Enel and the regional government signed an MoU in August 2009.[2] As of February 2011, Enel stated that it planned to have the terminal operational by 2015.[3]

In July 2016, after years of delays, Enel announced that it was shelving the project, due to market conditions. Enel has expressed interest in selling the project to another buyer.[4]

As of March 2019 there has been no further news about the project and it appears to be cancelled.
