PowerSouth Energy Cooperative
{{#badges:CoalSwarm}} PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, which was known as the Alabama Electric Cooperative until January 2008, "is a generation and transmission cooperative that provides the wholesale power needs of 20 distribution members — 16 electric cooperatives and four municipal electric systems — in Alabama and northwest Florida."[1] PowerSouth’s current fuel generation mix consists of: 67.7% coal, 29.1% natural gas, 2.8% hydro, and .4% renewable energy (landfill gas).[2]

Existing Coal Plants

Each year, the Lowman Power Plant burns approximately 1.5 million tons of coal to produce the steam needed to make electricity. Coal is transported to the plant by rail and by barge on the Tombigbee River. [3]
