Project Ariel was a British American Tobacco research effort circa 1966 aimed at developing a smoking device from which "a smoker could receive in a suitable form sufficient nicotine to give satisfactory physiological and psychological responses unaccompanied by the products of combustion and pyrolysis associated with normal cigarette smoking." It would entail delivery of an aerosol largely composed of nicotine.[1]
