Background

Rotterdam Bulk Terminal is independently owned and provides storage, transhipment and processing facilities for dry bulk goods, including coal.[2] It sits on a seven hectare territory with 120,000 tonnes of coal storage. In total, 3 million tonnes of dry cargo can be transshipped via the terminal on a yearly basis.[3]

Coal comes from outside Europe, and is then transported through the port to coal-fired power plants in the Netherlands and abroad.[1]

In November 2017, the Rotterdam municipal council adopted a motion calling for a reduction in coal transshipment. According to the local politicians, the port must contribute to reaching the goals set in the Paris Climate Agreement. However, in February 2018 the contract to transit coal through the port of Rotterdam was extended by 25 years, despite the objections.[1]

History

The terminal began as the Vulcaanhaven Terminal in Vlaardingen, built in 1900 for the German steel and coal industry. The Vulcaanhaven Terminal was later sold to Frans Swarttouw, the predecessor of EBS. Rotterdam Bulk Terminal was founded in 1999 by Hes Beheer (50%) and Maja Stevedores (50%) to take over the former EBS terminal.[4]
