Coal
In 2014, the Ministry of Environment issued conditions and standards for the approval of importing coal at the port to generate energy for cement and fertilizer plants.[1]
Proposed power stations
Safaga Power Station is a proposed 2,000MW coal-fired power station in Safaga that would import part of the coal required at the plant from abroad, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.[2]
Public opposition
People in the tourism industry and locals along the Red Sea have voiced their opposition to the importation of coal at Safaga port, saying it would cause pollution that would affect local livelihoods and the tourism industry.[3]
