Background

In 2009 Harum Energy bought the coal barging and transshipment company, PT Layar Lintas Jaya (LLJ). In its 2010 annual report the company states that LLJ owns and operates "a fleet of tugboats, barges and transshipment assets, including floating cranes."[2] The company also stated that "after crushing, coal is then loaded onto barges and transported to the open sea transshipment anchorages either at Muara Jawa (approximately 143 km) or Muara Berau (approximately 265 km). The coal is then transferred into the customer’s vessel using cranes. Barging and transshipment operations including floating crane activities are primarily conducted by LLJ.""[3]

In 2010 the port exported all the coal from the Separi mining operations of two Harum Energy subsidiaries, Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) and Santan Batubara (SB), about 40 km from the barge. In 2010 the company produced 7.4 million tonnes of thermal coal from its two operating coal projects. Harum Energy is currently developing a third coal mining operation which is due to be commissioned in 2011.[4]

From the barge, coal is transported to the open sea transshipment anchorage at Muara Berau/Muara Jawa Coal Terminal.[5]
