Background

The project is sponsored by M.P. Power Generating Company, which is also known as Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Co.

Stage I is a 1,200 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station. The first 600MW generating unit was commissioned in February 2014 and "is being operated as per availability of required quantity of coal."[1] The second 600 MW unit was commissioned in October 2014.[2]

Stage II of the project is the addition of another two 660MW units. According to a February 2014 status report, an application was submitted to the India Ministry of Environment & Forests for Stage II Environmental Clearance "on the basis of a comprehensive EIA study carried out earlier for both stages based on allocation of Gondbahera-Ujjaini coal block."[3]

The state PM laid the foundation stone for stage II in March 2015.[4] Boiler erection began in June 2015.[5]

Stage II is planned for operation in 2018.[6] Unit 3 was synchronized in May 2018,[7] and commissioned on August 14, 2018.[8]

Unit 4 was commissioned in February 2019.[9][10]
