Sidney D. Drell, "professor emeritus, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford University. He worked with Andrei D. Sakharov in supporting the human rights of Soviet scientists. During the period of Sakharov's exile and isolation, Drell was one of the prominent western scientists who kept in contact and put pressure on the Soviet regime to release Sakharov. He helped the American Physical Society formulate a policy of cooperation with Chinese physics colleagues while severely reducing any official APS-China connections. In addition, he was an instrumental force in the campaign to release Professor Fang Li-Zhi from China." [1]
