Background

Enbridge acquired the pipeline from BP in 2003, which had previously delivered crude from Cushing, Oklahoma, to the Chicago, Illinois area.

In 2006 Enbridge renamed the pipeline Spearhead, and reversed and reopened it to deliver Canadian crude oil to the major oil hub at Cushing, Oklahoma. The crude oil delivered to Cushing originates in Edmonton, Alberta, traveling through the Enbridge Pipeline mainline and Enbridge's Lakehead system to Chicago, before entering the 650-mile Spearhead Pipeline to Cushing. In 2007 Enbridge expanded the pipeline to 193,300 Bpd.

The pipeline was shut down on August 11, 2015 following a crude oil spill in northern Missouri. The restart date is unknown.
