The Group of 77, which is most commonly referred to simply as the G-77, was formed in June 1964 by seventy-seven developing countries which were signatories to the Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). While there are now 130 countries which are members of the group, the original name has been retained.
On its website the G-77 states that it aims to provide "the means for the countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system, and promote South-South cooperation for development."[1]
