Biography

Dr. Theodore Finley was encouraged by Council for Tobacco Research's lawyers to apply for cigarette research funding. He decided to examine whether emphysema can result from a reduction that smokers face in a protective lining of the lung. He soon backed out; "If my theory was correct, it would have discredited cigarettes. But it would have been hard to talk about the evils of tobacco while being supported by them at the same time. This was dirty money--I felt like a prostitute." (WSJ 2/11/93).
