Background
TİM Avrasya Yatırım is planning to build a 660-MW coal-fired power plant in Terme District of Samsun Province. The project received a production license,[1] which was cancelled in 2015 after a public opposition campaign prompted the ministry to end the environmental impact assessment process.[2]
Following Terme's objections to the project, the municipality declared a 563-hectare area near the Gölyazı and Gölardı villages as "Amazon Nature Park."[3]
Opposition
Twenty-six non-governmental organizations have opposed the plant, and formed the group Terme Çevre Platformu (Terme Environmental Platform). The mayor of Terme District, Şenol Kul, a member of the ruling AK Party, has spoken out very strongly against the proposal, saying that the highly biodiverse and environmentally pristine area of the Terme Plain would be endangered by the plant.[4]
