Background

The Wafa-Mellitah gas pipeline was built as part of the $6-billion Western Libyan Gas Project, which came online in October 2004. The project is owned by Mellitah Oil & Gas, which is a joint venture between Libya's state-owned National Oil Corporation and Italian firm Eni. The pipeline was built by China Power Engineering Consulting Group (CPECC). From the Mellitah oil & gas complex, gas is exported through the Greenstream Pipeline to Italy.
