The Bargarh power project was a proposed 1,980-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Location

The project was proposed to be built near the village of Bargarh, in Mau Taluk, in Chitrakoot District, in Uttar Pradesh. The map below shows the location of Bargarh village but not the exact location of the project.

Background

In May 2010 Uttar Pradesh government officials announced that an in principle decision had been made to proceed with the project though it had not been resolved whether it would be built by the government-owned utility, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut or by a private company.

In December 2010 the Uttar Pradesh government announced that it had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Bajaj Hindusthan to build the project, through a special purpose vehicle called Bajaj Power Generation Pvt Ltd. All the power from the project is slated for sale to the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation. At the time of the announced it was foreshadowed that the coal for the project could be either from domestic sources or imported and that the capacity of the plant could be doubled it adequate coal supplies were identified. The plant was planned for completion by 2014.

In February 2013 it was reported that Bajaj Hindusthan Ltd had decided to withdraw from the Bargarh power project following land acquisition related problems. The Bajaj Group might consider shifting the Bargarh project as an extension of its Lalitpur power project.
