Chain Valley Mine is an underground mine located on the southern shore of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia. Chain Valley produces thermal coal, which is sold both to local power authorities and to export customers through the Port of Newcastle. During 2008, the Chain Valley Mine sold 0.5 million tons of thermal coal.[1]
Operating at capacity, the mine can produce up to 1 million tons (0.91 million tonnes) of thermal coal annually. The mine's coal is screened, crushed, and sized to meet the specifications of export customers and the neighboring Delta Electricity Vales Point power station.[2]
Until December 2009 Peabody Energy Australia owned 80% of the Chain Valley Mine. In December 2009 the mine was sold to LDO Coal.[3]
