In late March 2012, on the first anniversary of the election of the Liberal government led by Barry O'Farrell, announced the establishment of the Dharawal National Park to protect the area from mining. The new 6,500 hectare National Park was gazetted with no depth limit, effectively banning underground mining. ABC News reported that O'Farrel stated that the new National Park would end plans by BHP subsidiary Illawarra Coal to mine within the actual park "and he says there will be no compensation paid to the mining company."[1]
