Background

The Flanagan South Pipeline is an interstate crude oil petroleum pipeline developed by Canadian energy company Enbridge to deliver crude oil from North Dakota's Bakken region and the western Canadian region to US Gulf Coast refineries.. The 593-mile (965 km) pipeline with a 36in-diameter runs from Flanagan, Illinois, to Cushing, Oklahoma. Construction contracts for the US$2.7 billion pipeline were awarded in 2013, and construction work began in the same year. The pipeline was operational in December 2014 with a capacity of 585,000 bpd.

Route

The pipeline runs adjacent to Enbridge's existing Spearhead Oil Pipeline from the Flanagan terminal in Illinois to the Cushing terminal in Oklahoma, with deviations at a few locations. The crude oil supplied through Flanagan South Pipeline to Enbridge's Cushing terminal is sent to Gulf Coast refineries via the Seaway Oil Pipeline System, jointly owned by Enbridge and Enterprise.
