Background

The concession to build a coal plant in Coahuila was granted by Mexican president Vicente Fox in November 2005. Grupo México announced the GMéxico project publicly in September 2006, only seven months after an infamous explosion at the company's nearby Pasta de Conchos mine killed 65 coal miners. Tensions between Grupo México and the surrounding community increased in the aftermath of the mine disaster, and plans for the power plant were eventually abandoned. Neither the power plant nor the mine disaster is mentioned on Grupo México's website.
