Background on Plant

Coal India plans to set up a Rs 9,000 crore power plant in Odisha. The 2x800 megawatt (MW) plant would be at the mouth of a coal field in the Mahanadi basin. Coal India said in 2013 that the project will take up to four years to begin generating electricity.

The project received a terms of reference in 2012. According to the India MoEF website (accessed April 2015), the project was considered for environmental clearance in March 2014, but the committee asked Mahanadi Basin Power for more information before making its decision.

As of May 2016 the project has yet to receive environmental clearance, and plans appear to be deferred or abandoned.
