Background on Plant

In October 2012 NTPC and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) sent a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh government to establish two 500 MW coal-fired power plants in the state — Jagdishpur captive power station and Gonda power station. As per the proposal, the state would also get power from the plants. Both power projects would require 640 acres of land; officials said that SAIL already had around 500 acres of land in Jagdishpur, and about 140 acres of additional land needs to be arranged. It was suggested that coal for the power stations would come from NMDC's coal mines at Shahapur.

The project is mentioned in the company's 2013-4 Annual Report, but as of May 2016 has yet to receive environmental clearance, and appears to be deferred or abandoned.
