Jharia coal mines is a 30 million ton-per-annum (MTPA) system of coal mines on the Jharia coalfield in Jharkhand state, India.

Location

The map below shows the entire Jharia coalfield, in Dhanbad District, Jharkhand State (the gray areas are mostly coal mines). The coalfield extends from about 23.6 to 23.8 N, and from 86.1 to 86.5 W. It lies in the western half of Dhanbad District.

Background on Mine

The Jharia coalfield is home to dozens of coal mines, both surface and underground, owned by Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Indian state-owned Coal India.

Coal Fires

The Jharia coalfield is home to a massive group of coal fires, first detected in 1916 and burning ever since. In August 2006 the Indian government announced plans to relocate all 400,000 people in the township of Jharia, due to ongoing subsidence and other hazards from the coal fires.
