Kadaladi power station is a proposed 4,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Ramanathapuram district, India.

Background

In September 2015 Tamil Nadu Generation & Distribution Corporation Ltd., (TANGEDCO) announced plans for a 4,000 MW coal plant in Kadaladi taluk. In April 2016 TANGEDCO said it had shortlisted three sites for the plant: Tharaikudi and Kannirajapuram Narippaiyur villages (Site 1), Kondalampatti village (Site 2) and Valinokkam and Siraikulam villages (Site 3).

In September 2016 it was reported the expert appraisal committee (EAC) on thermal power and coal mining, which considered the project at its 30 August meeting, has asked the state government to explore new sites. The panel said all the sites are located within the buffer zone of the marine national park in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve.

As of June 2017 there is no mention of the project on the the TANGEDCO website. It appears to be abandoned.

In December 2017 it was reported that a minimum 500 MW solar park will be built by TANGEDCO at Naripaiyur village in Kadaladi, on land that had been planned for the Kadaladi coal-fired power station. The solar park is planned for commissioning in 2019.
