Background on Plant

Nagapattinam Energy proposes to set up a 1x150 MW imported coal thermal power plant at village Karapidagai North in Tamil Nadu. Coal would be imported from Indonesia. The project received an environmental clearance permit in 2012.

Nagapattinam Energy sought an amendment to its environmental permit on the plant in 2014.

With nearly four years since the receipt of its environmental clearance and no apparent activity, the project appears to be defunct.

Opposition

According to press reports, the project in Kilvelur taluk was among a number of coastal plants that faced "vociferous protests" by villagers due to concerns that pollution would harm the livelihood of farmers and fishermen.
