Proposed coal power stations and mines
As demand for electricity has grown rapidly, the Neyveli Lignite Corporation have proposed to build a number of new lignite and coal fired power stations and associated coal mines. These are the:
- Bithnok Thermal Power Project, a 250 megawatt lignite fired power station with the associated Bithnok lignite mine near Bithnok in Bikaner District, Rajasthan state, India;[2]
- the the 375 megawatt (MW) Barsingsar Thermal Power Project, which has been partly commissioned, and the associated Barsingsar Mine.[2]
- Gujarat Power Project is a proposed 500 megawatt (MW) coal plant of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) in Gujarat state, India.[3]
Projects cancelled
In May 2011, NLC announced that it was cancelling previous plants to build a 2,000 MW power project in Orissa in a three-way joint venture with Mahanadi Coal Fields Ltd and Hindalco Industries. The company also announced it was cancelling a 1,000 MW power project in Madhya Pradesh with Northern Coalfields Ltd.[4]
