The Goonyella to Abbot Point Expansion Project is a $1.1 billion upgrading project which is currently under construction by QR National.

The project will increase the rail capacity supplying the Abbot Point Coal Terminal to 50 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The project involves upgrading and connecting the Goonyella Rail System and Newlands Rail System. The extension is expected to be commissioned in early 2012. (This project is also occasionally referred to as the GAP Project or the Northern Missing Link).[1]

On its website QR National states that "on behalf of coal customers BMA, Rio Tinto, QCoal, Macarthur Coal and Lake Vermont Resources, this project will deliver 50 Mtpa through to the Port of Abbot Point near Bowen, by mid 2012. First railings are set to commence in January 2012."[2]
