Background
Coal has traditionally been the Port of Nordenham's leading commodity, but its importance has declined in recent years. In a 2015 interview with Nordwest Zeitung, the port's managing director Uwe Oppitz said that coal, together with a smaller percentage of wood, made up 90% of the port's business until a few years ago, but today only accounts for about 50% of annual sales volume. As of 2015, the Port of Nordenham was handling approximately 1.6 million tonnes of coal per year, including some destined for the Bremen-Farge power station, 40km to the south.[2]
