Woori Coal Mine is a proposed open-cut coal mine project under consideration by Cockatoo Coal. The project is located 19 km south of Wandoan and immediately west of the township of Guluguba.
The project, which is the subject of a feasibility study, has a notional commissioning date of 2013. It is estimated that the mine would produce 3-4 million tonnes of thermal coal per annum.[1]
The Department of Environment and Resource Management states on its website that "the proposed open cut coal mine would produce an initial rate of 3 million tonnes a year (Mt/y) run of mine (ROM) thermal coal for export. The project would ramp up to 6 Mt/y within one year of the start. Coal would be crushed, sized and washed on site by a coal handling and processing plant, and transported by rail to the Port of Gladstone. The mine life would be approximately 15 years."[2]
On its website, Cockatoo Coal states that EIS work is "underway as part of feasibility studies for a 3.0-3.5Mtpa thermal coal operation. This project is being developed with a view to commencing production, to coincide with the opening of planned new rail and port infrastructure slated for 2013/14. In addition, significantly increased JORC resources at the Tin Hut Creek (EPC 1134/813) and Bottle Tree projects (EPC 813) announced recently – both within 20km of Woori - point to the potential for Cockatoo to develop a larger ~6Mtpa+ multi-pit operation in the area, when sufficient infrastructure capacity is available."[3]
