Background

In December 2010 Unitech Machines signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to build the power station in Auraiya district, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Unitech Machines (UM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the UM Group, a privately owned Indian auto and engineering company. The plant plans to utilize 90% of the electricity produced within the state.

In November 2014 the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission said it had quashed setting up four thermal power plants of over 1700 MW capacity, saying the companies were lagging far behind in completing the projects despite being given two extensions. Projects cancelled included Auraiya.
