Hanakon Thermal Power Project was a proposed 450-megawatt coal-fired power station in Karnataka, India.

Location
The map below shows the location of Uttar Kannada District in Karnataka, India but not the exact location of the project.
Background
The project was proposed by Ind Bharat Power (Karwar) Ltd., and planned to be fueled by a mix of Indian and Indonesian coal.[1]
However, following strong community opposition to the project, the company decided that it be moved to Tuticorin. The company’s Executive Director A N Vasu Rao said, "the thermal power plant at Hanakon has been shifted due to strong public protest and considering the delicate environment issues. Now, the project it be established to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu."[2] For further details see Thoothukudi power station.
Citizen opposition
In July 2009, a protest was held against the Hanakon Thermal Power Project. It was reported that thousands of people participated in the protest and "submitted a memorandum to the district administration urging them to stop the thermal project." Speakers at the protest stated it was a "do-or-die battle against the thermal project to save the environment and the bio-diversity of the region."[3]
