Background on Plant
In December 2008, Atlas Enerji Üretim A.Ş. (a subsidiary of Diler Holding) received environmental permits to build the two-unit, 1,200-MW, $1.2 billion coal-fired Atlas Enerji power station in Turkey's Hatay province.[1][2] Construction on the plant began in 2011.[3] In 2013, there was controversy over whether or not the plant would employ union workers.[4]
Unit 1 was commissioned in August 2014 and unit 2 in December 2014. The company states that flue gas emission values are reported to the Energy Ministry in real time.[5][6]
Legal challenge to plant's license
In November 2018 Eastern Mediterranean Environment Associations (DAÇE) filed a lawsuit to have the plant's operating license revoked on the grounds that impact studies used for licensure were incomplete and inadequate.[7]
