Background on Plant
In September 2013 it was announced that Nurol Enerji was applying to build a 1,600-MW, $1.6 billion coal-fired power plant and a deep-sea port in Turkey's Çanakkale province.[1] Opposition to the plant came immediately, both from local activists and from the Greens and Left Party.[2][3]
Several weeks later, Nurol Enerji announced that it was abandoning the project. With local elections coming up, it was speculated that the decision was a political came as a result of political maneuvers by the ruling AKP.[4][5]
