Background on Plant

In September 2010, the Habaş Group filed for environmental permits to build a 600-MW coal-fired power plant on the Mediterranean coast in İzmir province. The preliminary review has been completed, and the project is currently in the public hearing phase of the permitting process.

In October 2013, a public meeting held in Aliağa as part of the permitting process was met with angry protests of local residents.

In August 2014 it was reported the plant would be fuelled by natural gas, not coal.
