Background on Plant

First lignite coal exploration in Konya Ilgın area started in 1980s by MTA.[1] In 2011, Ciner Group has proposed to build an open-pit lignite mine and a two-unit, 500-MW, $1.2 billion, mine-to-mouth coal-fired power plant in Konya province.[1] Ciner Group is also leaving open the possibility of building a third 250-MW unit at a future date.Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag Turkey's Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) issued permits for the project in February 2013.

Three villages would have to be resettled and at least 3 hectares land would be re-planned in order for the plant to be built, and the mayors of these villages have protested the plant's construction.[2] In 2015, ICBC and Ciner Groups signed the credit agreement and announced the plant will start operation in 2019.[3]

In April 2015 the project was reported as licensed.
